BUNNY
Rather than contributing to the cycle of waste and overproduction, I approached this project through an upcycling lens, transforming the denim into a whimsical bunny-shaped backpack inspired by a childhood bookbag I once treasured. This process not only diverted an existing garment from potential landfill but also celebrated the value of extending a material’s lifespan through creativity. By reimagining a fabric often criticized for its environmental footprint into a playful, functional piece, the project demonstrates how sustainability and sentimentality can coexist, turning an emblem of overconsumption into a symbol of preservation, memory, and responsible design.
The sturdy denim, with its years of wear, added a sense of resilience to the form, while the bunny motif brought back the innocence and lightheartedness of being a child.
The result is more than just an accessory—it’s a functional keepsake, a piece that preserves personal history while evolving into something new and relevant for today. This project is part of my ongoing exploration of nostalgia: how design can serve as a vessel for memory, how old materials can be transformed into objects that carry emotional weight, and how the sentimental can coexist with the practical. By giving my father’s jeans a second life as a whimsical backpack, I created a design that is not only sustainable but also deeply personal, embodying the connection between family, memory, and creative reinvention.

This bookbag is crafted entirely from upcycled denim jeans, reimagined through a playful and unconventional design lens. Drawing inspiration from childhood nostalgia—a recurring theme in my work—the piece evokes the warmth and intimacy of cherished memories. Reflecting on my own past, I was inspired by a bright tomato-red rabbit-shaped bookbag I carried as a child. This new design transforms that sentimental connection into a modern, wearable form. More than just a functional accessory, the bag represents a tangible link between my childhood and adulthood, preserving the emotions and stories I hold dear. Every element of the bag was thoughtfully patterned from scratch, made entirely from a single pair of jeans, demonstrating how sustainability and personal history can beautifully intertwine.
Features:
Hardware: This bag contains a zipper and two D-rings, connecting the straps to the rabbit and making it wearable. The zipper was a basic invisible zipper.
Head: The head of the bunny was hand-sewn onto the body/base.
Stuffing: The bag is soft and plump to the touch and is filled completely with polyfill. This includes the ears, paws, head, body, and legs.
Lace: A lace trim was tied around the neck to form a ribbon to represent a touch of femininity found in many personal works. Although the bag itself is not traditionally feminine or masculine, the ribbon stayed true to the overarching theme of many personal pieces.
Darts: Each paw/foot has two darts to support not only the curvature of a traditional paw, but to give off the impression of a stereotypical and animated rabbit’s foot. It was chosen to showcase a bunny paw in my mind, and if I were to illustrate it, what it would look like.
